Yasin Yakuti, a member of the Presidium of the Paris Bar Association, and Alice Arfi, another lawyer who has extensive media contacts, visited the Bar Association of the Republic of Azerbaijan to establish direct contacts and discuss prospects for future cooperation.
Receiving the guests, Chairman of the Bar Anar Bagirov informed about the war, the 44-day counter-offensive and the glorious victory. He also informed the guests that the Bar Association twice during and after the war addressed legal and factually substantiated reports to 230 international organizations, calling on the Republic of Armenia to assess war crimes, environmental and cultural terrorism and strongly condemn these actions. Then A. Bagirov spoke about the work done by the Bar Association over the past three years, as well as activities and cooperation in the international arena.
The guests noted that they, along with a group of French lawyers, had petitioned the French government for the bias of official Paris, which in turn had damaged reputation of France in the region and disrespected international law. They also added that they called on France to take a position based on international law, not the position it wants. In particular, they called on the government to support the sending of a UNESCO mission to Azerbaijan to assess the damage caused to the cultural values of Azerbaijan during the occupation.
In addition, the newly elected member of the Presidium Y. Yakuti noted with regret the weak relations between the two Bar Associations and the fact that cooperation has not been strengthened for many years, and stressed the need to build strong and healthy relations. He also said they would be glad to implement joint visits and projects.
The meeting was also attended by Bayram Orujov, Chief of Staff of the Bar Association, Famil Mammadov, a French-educated lawyer in Strasbourg, and Eldar Mammadov, an employee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Extensive discussions were held at the event, and it was decided to implement them through regular contacts on the ideas put forward and the planned work.
